Sarah Lehnert, PhD

I am a Research Scientist at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). I have recently started a new position in late 2025 at the Gulf Fisheries Center in New Brunswick.

As a scientist with the Aquatic Animal Health Section, my new role working in the ISO17025-accredited labs in the Gulf Region will be to support the National Aquatic Animal Health Program (NAAHP) by conducting research on aquatic pathogens of concern on the East Coast of Canada and development of diagnostic tests for the detection of these pathogens. I will also
have oversight of the eDNA Unit that develops and performs tests to: detect the presence of aquatic species of interest using eDNA technology and identify (unknown) aquatic species (e.g. forensics analysis)

Prior to this role, my research has focuses on genomic approaches for the conservation and management of salmonids, as well as projects focused on predicting the impacts of climate change on aquatic species.
